An opera in one act. Composed in 1888-1889. Libretto by Guido Menasci and Giovanni Targioni-Tozzetti after the play by Giovanni Verga. First performed at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome on May 17, 1890.
Cavalleria rusticana is an opera of fiery emotions on classical themes: love betrayed, jealousy and revenge. Among the leading characters are Santuzza and her soldier sweetheart Turiddu, who has his eye on Lola, wife of Alfio the carrier. Alfio finally kills Turiddu in a duel.

An opera in two acts and a prologue. Composed in 1890. Libretto by Ruggiero Leoncavallo. First performed at the Teatro dal Verme, Milan on May 21, 1892.
The private lives of the members of a little band of players are paralleled on the stage in this classic triangle drama. Nedda (in the play Colombina), wife of Canio (in the play Pagliacci), leader of the players, has fallen in love with Silvio, a villager. Tonio the clown (in the play Taddeo) tries to worm his way into Nedda’s affections.
