Vincenzo Bellini: I Puritani
A Teatro Massimo di Palermo production.
An opera in three acts. Libretto by Carli Pepoli. First performed in Paris on January 25, 1835. I Puritani has never before been performed in Finland.
I Puritani is set in the period 1649-1658 when England was ruled by Oliver Cromwell, the Puritan leader responsible for the assassination of Catholic King Charles I. Cromwell wished to sever the country’s ties with the Catholic Church. The opera also has a second plot: the love between Puritan Elvira and Catholic Arturo. The postponement of their wedding when Arturo rescues the dowager Queen Henrietta and is condemned to death by the Puritans results in no fewer than two mad scenes for Elvira before a general reprieve permits a happy ending. I Puritani, considered the most brilliant of the Bellini operas and the one with the most interesting plot, is full of great melodic numbers.
