Gaetano Donizetti: Lucia di Lammermoor
In collaboration with Malmö Opera
An opera in three acts. Libretto by Salvatore Cammarano after the novel by Sir Walter Scott. First performed in Naples on September 26, 1835.
The events of Donizetti’s moving drama are set in late-17th-century Scotland. The noble families of Lucia di Lammermoor and Edgardo Ravenswood are bitter enemies and the lovers become the victims of their families’ lust for power and treachery.
Lucia di Lammermoor is above all a soprano and tenor opera. It is best known for Lucia’s mad scene, one of the most impressive and most difficult vocal feats in bel canto opera. Cast in the title role is Eglise Gutiérrez, who captured the hearts of Savonlinna audiences to great critical acclaim in summer 2007.
